7 billion people and rising – how big is your picture?

Our numbers are growing. Our appetite is growing. Our pockets are growing. Our footprints are growing. How can this then be sustained?

Sustainability is about being strategic on how we ensure 7 billion people have their basic needs met now while ensuring the planet’s resources can continue to meet the projected world population of 9+ billion in the future.

Sustainability is about expanding our consciousness to incorporate the concept of 7 billion people and rising. We have to build that consciousness into our lifestyle decisions, business decisions and political decisions. We have to build economies based on this consciousness – a sustainable economy which is not just measured by ‘growth’.

Sustainability is redesigning and rethinking the way of life for a global people. Since there is more of ‘us’ now and in the future, it is about doing more with less. It involves being efficient and resourceful. Sustainability now is all about slowing the degradation rate – buying time for those who are pursuing the technology solutions which are instrumental in living a sustainable lifestyle.

Can the words ‘sustainable’ and ‘growth’ be in the same sentence? Can you have growth that is sustainable? We need a different approach to growth. Look at who is pushing back - old school capitalists, politicians, the regular man on the street. Can we change that? There are already enough stories out there to show that it is not impossible. It is simply an ethical decision, a decision with significant consequences.
