Green Gas – The Only Fuels Offered in Orangegas Stations, Port of Amsterdam

Port of Amsterdam, which is currently one of the largest coal and petrol transhipment ports in Europe, is undergoing a major transition to a sustainable port as part of the Amsterdam Climate Program to become a sustainable metropolis by 2040. Shore power supplies are available for ships docked in the port that will prevent the emission of hazardous substances and reduce noise pollution. Other efforts done by the Port of Amsterdam to become a sustainable port are installation of new wind turbines and solar panel installations.

The latest achievement for the Port of Amsterdam is the opening of a green gas station that only offers sustainable fuels. The gas station which is officially opened on December 12th 2012, is owned by Orangegas while AEB, Amsterdam’s Waste and Energy Company, is sourcing the green gas.

Waternet, a sewage treatment company, converts residual sludge into biogas before supplying it to AEB to be converted into green gas for many years. With the opening of the green gas station, a sustainable cycle has become full circle. Garbage is collected from all over the town, converted into biogas and later into green gas to fill up tanks at Orangegas’ stations.

The green gas stations are accessible to private and business consumers. Waternet and AEB’s collaboration is expected to produce 20 million m3 of biogas by 2020, of which half can be converted into green gas.

Port of Amsterdam has proven that it is possible to switch to sustainable fuels for motorized vehicles now. Could Malaysia not do the same in the near future? Beforehand, let’s ask ourselves these questions:
·         Can you choose to live sustainably?
·         Will you choose to live sustainably?
