Malaysia Tests its First Locally Manufactured Electric Buses

The Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (MGTC) launched Malaysia’s first ever electric bus pilot project in Kuala Lumpur recently. The initiative aims to introduce as many as 2,000 electric buses on Malaysian roads by 2020, with the first bus traveling in downtown Kuala Lumpur by middle of next year. The electric buses are built by Chinese automaker BYD Co. but will be locally manufactured in Malaysia. The Government has also enlisted the local unit of Panasonic Corporation, among others, to develop outlets for battery charging stations. The electric buses are said to have the capacity to travel 250km on a single charge. The lithium-ion battery would take about five hours and forty-five minutes to be fully charged.
