Automotive designers are challenged to apply natural forms and functions as inspiration for their concept cars in this year’s Auto Show in Los Angeles. The concept car would also have to adapt and solve various transportation issues such as traffic congestion, air pollution, safety and sustainability. A total of 9 automotive design studios from around the globe have risen to meet the design challenge with their original and unique designs. The entries will be evaluated on various fields from adaptation creativity of nature’s laws, sustainability of the vehicle’s life cycle and many more. A list of entries from the automotive design studios with brief introduction of their concept car can be found at the website below.

The European Commission will provide free, full and open access to environmental data from Copernicus – Europe’s earth observation system, which will come into effect in December 2013. Under the open data distribution system, the service sector for environmental data production and distribution and even space manufacturing will benefit most from this initiative. Nevertheless, more accurate earth observation from Copernicus may provide advantages to the transport, agriculture and oil and gas sectors as well. Lastly, the open data distribution system will support citizens, businesses, researchers and policy makers to integrate environmental aspects into their activities and decision-making procedures.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has signed a law in September that 90% of diesel-powered municipal fleets in New York are required to replace their trucks with newer and less polluting models by 2017, to meet the EPA emission control standards from 2007. The waste collection companies are given options to either retrofit their older trucks or to replace the trucks entirely. If private haulers discontinue the usage of their old trucks by 2020, it is projected that an equivalent of 341,829 cars will be removed from city roads every year between 2014 and 2030. This would significantly reduce particulate emission by 796 tons.

Nanyan Technological University's Energy Research Institute has designed and constructed a tidal turbine which can accommodate slower tidal flows. The project was partly funded by Ministry of Trade and Industry and Sentosa Development Corp. In the next 3 to 5 years, test installations are planned for the southern waters of Singapore including St. John Island and Sebarok Island. The southern waters have the potential of housing 200 tidal turbine systems with an installed capacity of 200MWp, which can generate enough power for 5000 HDP Flats.

Japan Opens its Largest Offshore Solar Power Plant

Kyocera Corporation has launched a 70-megawatt (MW) solar power plant which floats offshore in a grid, in Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan. The plant is Japan’s largest utility scale solar power plant consisting of 290,000 solar panels, covering an area roughly the same area as 27 baseball stadiums (approximately 1,270,000m2). The solar plant is an example of Japan’s switch to renewable energy, as a direct result of power supply issues associated with the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The plant also includes a tour facility, featuring a circular observation room and educational displays, to promote awareness of renewable energy.

What Would the World look like if all its Ice Melts?

National Geographic has recently mapped out the World atlas, showing the new coastline of the continents should all the ice on land melt and drained into the sea, raising it by 216 feet (65.8 metres).   It is reported that there are more than 5 million cubic miles of ice on Earth which scientists say would take 5,000 years to melt. The maps show major cities around the world would be submerged and islands completely disappearing. It is a reminder of the inevitable change in our climate and its impact should we continue to emit carbon to the atmosphere.

A marine conservation project led by H2O Plus, Hume Cement and Marine Monkees saw the construction of artificial reefs in the waters of Pulau Soyak, near Tioman, Malaysia. The structure is made out of 72 reinforced cement blocks that weigh 70 kilograms each with its pH corrected so as not to interfere with the water salinity. It is shaped into a double moon crescent, in order to withstand strong water currents from any direction. It is anticipated that the structure will provide an ideal location for floating coral larvae to settle down and flourish.

China’s Solution to its Smog: ‘Vacuum’ it

The latest solution to the Chinese smog emergency comes from a Dutch designer, Daan Roosegaarde. He has proposed an ambitious idea to magnetically pull smog particles to the ground using a new “electronic vacuum”. By creating an electrostatic field using a series of electrodes connected to a power supply located just above the ground, all nearby air and smog particles will become positively charged. Another device will then pull these particles to the ground, where they will be collected and disposed of as normal waste. Although the project is still in its early phases, a working prototype will soon be deployed in a Beijing public park. For a video and diagram of the chemistry behind Roosegaarde's smog system, click on the link below.
