Green Living Zoo Volunteer Programme & Enrichment Workshop

Zoo Negara, in partnership with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) will be holding a Volunteer Programme and Enrichment Workshop for interested volunteers. The programme is limited to a maximum of 40 participants (ideally, 10 – 20 adults and 20 – 30 children). Priority will be given to MNS members and registration of participants will be on a first come, first serve basis. This initiative is a fantastic way of helping wildlife and understanding the challenges involved in operating, managing and funding wildlife facilities. You will be able to do hands-on work to create a safe, clean and healthy environment for the animals.

Big Bear Little Dreams

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) Is having a fundraiser event to raise over RM 500,000 to partially fund 25% of the 2nd bear house’s construction and some of the BSBCC operation costs for 2013. The event will be a grand fundraising banquet evening, with programmes ad performances by local and international celebrities to gather the Sandakan business community together to better understand the work and value of the bears.

Trip: Sungai Keroh, FRIM

6th July 2013

A half day hiking trip to trace the source of a tributary to Sungai Keroh, which flows through the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) organised by Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) will be held on 6th July 2013. The trip will be led by a botanist and nature guides, Chew Ming Yee and Lim Chung Lu. This trip is not suitable for children below 12 years as most of the walk is done off trail. July 2013 Raja Musa Forest Reserve Monthly Tree Planting

Selangor Forestry Department (Selangor FD) and Global Environment Centre (GEC) have collaborated to establish the Raja Musa Forest Reserve Rehabilitation Programme. It is currently funded by HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad. This upcoming event involves tree planting activities and monitoring of tree growth. The organisations invite all to participate in this valuable cause which aims to rehabilitate more than 1,000 ha of degraded forest within and adjacent to the Raja Musa Forest Reserve through community participation as well as protecting remaining intact areas. ACCA Malaysia Sustainability Reporting Awards (MaSRA)

The MasRA award is organised by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Malaysia to give recognition to those organizations which report and disclose full sustainability, environmental or social information. “Selamatkan Bumi Kita” – World Environment Day Celebration

The Department of Environment – State of Johor will be celebrating World Environment Day at Aeon, Tebrau City, Johor, with the theme of its current program ‘Selamatkan Bumi Kita’ (Save Our Earth). A number of fun activities are planned for the day including an environmental poem competition, a TABIKA fashion show of recycled materials and re-usable shopping bags giveaway. A Memorandum of Understanding will also be signed between the Johor Department of Environment and its Smart Partnerships associates. Everyone is invited along to this eco fun day.

Shah Alam Trees for Life June 2013

‘SHAH ALAM TREES FOR LIFE’ committee will be holding its 4th tree planting event in Shah Alam. The event is held in partnership with the Shah Alam Local Government, Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA). Certificates of Participation signed by the Datuk Bandar of Shah Alam will be given out to all volunteers participating in the tree planting activity. Do come with friends and family to join in this worthwhile cause. Details of the event are below:

SUMO to Zoo Negara for WED/CSR

In conjunction with World Environmental Day(WED), SUMO helped organise a CSR outing to Zoo Negara for a group of children from disadvantaged background from Pusat Penyayang KSKA on 8th June 2013. The day started out with the group arriving at the Zoo at 9:00 am and was promptly greeted by the friendly staff of Zoo Negara. After ticketing was done, the children were divided into small groups of 3 to 4 with an adult accompanying each group. Educational worksheets were given to the children to complete as they walk around the zoo.

The children enjoyed themselves with the variety of animals found in the zoo and were truly entertained by the multi animal show at 11:00 am in the open air theatre. Lunch was pre-packed for the kids and their teachers. After the completion of the worksheets, the children were awarded with posters and story books by Zoo Negara for completing their worksheets brilliantly.

At 3:00 pm, the group left Zoo Negara with lots of smiles and laughter and it was wonderful to watch the amazement of the kids as they encountered animals they have never seen before. SUMO hopes these kids have gained a greater appreciation of nature and will be inspired to do their part to preserve it.
